2025 List: Countries Requiring a Visa for Mexicans and General Procedures

Which Countries Require a Visa for Mexican Citizens?

International travel has become increasingly accessible for Mexican citizens, but some countries still demand a visa.

Let’s break it down by continent:

North America

In North America, the list is quite short, since it only includes the United States and Canada, in addition to Mexico.

In this case, both countries require visas for Mexicans.

To enter the U.S., the visa depends on the purpose of the trip, since they have different categories. That is to say, they can request visas for tourism, studies and work.

Visa costs also vary according to the category.

On the other hand, Canada requires a visa for Mexicans since 2024, after you could enter only with an electronic authorization (eTA). Although this is still possible, only in specific cases, for example, if you have had a Canadian visa in the last 10 years.

General Procedures to Obtain a Visa

Now that you know which countries require visas for Mexicans, it is time to prepare yourself and learn the basic steps of the process.

It is worth mentioning that the specific details may vary depending on the destination and the type of visa. Even so, there are common procedures that usually apply in most cases.

1. Identify the Type of Visa You Need

Before beginning the application, determine the purpose of your trip: tourism, studies, work, residency, or business.

Why? Because the requirements to study in the U.S. differ from those for a visitor visa. Always check the official consulate site of your destination to identify the correct visa.

2. Ensure Your Passport Is Valid

Your Mexican passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your planned date of entry.

If it needs renewal or if it’s your first time applying, visit the SRE website.

3. Gather All Required Documents

Each country has its own requirements, but common documents include:

  • Completed visa application form.

  • Recent passport-size photo meeting destination-specific guidelines.

  • Proof of visa fee payment.

  • Proof of financial solvency (bank statements, job letter, income statements).

  • International medical insurance (mandatory for destinations like the Schengen Area).

  • Additional documents depending on visa type: invitation letter, school acceptance, work contract, etc.

Some countries may also require travel itinerary details, including flight and accommodation bookings made on platforms like Booking or Expedia.

4. Schedule Your Visa Appointment

Most visa processes require an appointment at the embassy, consulate, or an authorized visa center.

Book early, as slots can fill quickly.

5. Attend the Interview (If Required)

In some countries the interview is part of the process.

The idea is that you explain in person several aspects. For example, why you are going to that country, when you plan to return to Mexico and if your financial situation is solid enough to afford the trip.

You will need to provide all supporting documents.

6. Submit Your Application and Await the Result

On your appointment day, submit all required documents. Ensure you haven’t forgotten anything.

You may also be asked to provide fingerprints, an extra photo, and will receive a tracking code.

Once approved, you can collect your visa or receive it by mail, depending on your application process.

Be patient and stay alert to any notifications—it can take days to weeks.
